Wow, this month is flying by. The fourth graders have been extremely busy since we got back from winter break. Here is a little taste of what has been happening in class lately.<br />
<br />
In reading, the students finished their reading group books and had final conversations about the elements of plot. We then started a nonfiction unit. Our room is loaded with all types of nonfiction books that the students will be diving in to read. We've been working on the fact that readers read nonfiction to learn new things and that this type of reading is around them all the time. Students are starting to recognize that instruction manuals for those new toys, recipes that they make at home, and most of the reading they do here at school are all examples of nonfiction. I'm trying to instill a love of this type of writing. I want to expose them to the various differences and the breadth of choices that they have available to them.<br />

In writing, students are working on writing personal essays. They are using their prior knowledge of essay writing and using it to focus their thinking and ideas on a topic that matters to them. They are in the middle of creating proof for their paragraphs using their own experiences and knowledge. We will soon take these one step farther and write an on demand essay based on what they are learning in social studies.<br />

Fractions have been a huge push in math class. Students have reviewed the basics of fractions that they learned in third grade, and have gone further to understand equivalent fractions and how to add fractions together. We have used egg cartons, rulers, and now clocks as the basis for visualizing fractions. Ask your child to share the various fractions they can make on a clock! I also want to stress that as we are coming to the end of getting weekly multiplication flashcards (we have 2 sets left: 11 and 12), students will be expected to know their facts pretty fluently. We have had weekly quizzes since November, and these will continue to prove that they are doing their homework. It is so important that your child know these facts. Please make it a priority at home. 5-7 minutes a night reviewing their flashcards will go a long way in their learning.<br />
<br />
Finally, the students have been enthusiastically working on their Vermont History projects. They have each selected a topic that they wanted to know more about and have spent the past week and a half researching and learning all they can using books, websites, videos and even interviewing experts. We will begin working on the project portion of this study. Students have choice in how they present their knowledge. We've given them access to various apps and sites that they might use, and this decision will be made very carefully in the next few days. The finished project should be available for you to view by the end of next week.<br />

We are certainly busy here, and I'm so thankful for all of the parental support at home. In this crazy week leading up to the December vacation, it is often difficult to get kids' attention and keep focus on the school work at hand. However, this week was a little different, at least during reading class. The students were introduced to a wonderful online resource called Popplet. It is basically a way to organize your thoughts and ideas. The students were asked to do some thinking about the main character in their reading club books. We discussed character traits and the evidence we have to prove that a character is a certain way. Students talked about the differences between being a characteristic at one small moment in time because of a single event and being a trait most of the time, over and over. They worked hard on diving into their books and finding examples of the traits that they categorized their character. From there they organized all of their thinking in a fun, meaningful way using Popplet.<br />
<br />
Once finished, they shared their Popplets with the members of their reading group, who then got to add comments, suggestions, their own thinking, and compliments right onto the popplet. Then the owners could go back in, read all of the comments, make changes and respond. It caused for wonderful conversations and sharing of thinking. I've posted some of the popplets below for you to see. You won't be able to see the comments as the site is interactive, and in order to see the comments you have to push on the Popples themselves.<br />

This week's focus was on learning about the job of a historian and starting to notice the change and continuity in Vermont using artifacts. It was a really exciting few days.<br />

We started the week focusing on the job of a historian. Ask you child what a historian does and why they do it, I am sure they will be able to give you an earful. To make this more meaningful to the students, we covered the room with old artifacts spanning the generations of Vermont's history. Thank you so much to Mrs. Susan Moore for bringing in all sorts of old family gems. After becoming familiar with the job of a historian and why the study the past, the students were given post it notes and told to roam the room exploring. They were given the instruction to write down any questions that they might have about the items they were looking at. The students spent the next half hour exploring, talking, examining, and most important, thinking. When we gathered back together they had a million questions of the items. They were very thoughtful and had wonderful predictions based on what the items looked like or how they moved. <br />
<br />
On day two, students were given access to this amazing website that offers thousands of old photos of Vermont. They had a task to begin looking at the photos as historians, trying to find clues to how things were during the time of the photo. Students began noticing the details. Some of my favorite comments from this activity:<br />
"The houses have more windows! Maybe they needed them because they didn't have electricity."<br />
" The women are wearing this think around their neck that look like they choke them."<br />
" Why do all the men have big bushy beards?"<br />
As you can see, their minds were racing with questions.<br />

On day three, the class was given multiple old maps of Vermont. They ranged from 1774 to the late 1800s. They had a task to look and find the similarities and differences in the maps. I explained that Vermont hasn't always looked exactly as it does today. They were told to pay close attention to the towns, counties, boundaries, spellings of names, etc. They dove in and began noticing some fascinating things. Every discovery brought up new questions and more predictions. "How come on this map it says it is New York?" "How come this map says it is the Province of New Hampshire?" They were so into this activity that they didn't come close to finishing. They will have more time on Monday to finish.<br />
<br />
Next week we will shift our focus to building a general timeline of the Eras of Vermont. Students will each get to study one of the six eras and share their findings with the rest of the class. We will put together their work to create a giant timeline of the History of Vermont.<br />

Ask them what that word means, they should be able to spit out the definition. We zoomed in starting from the continents, to our country, to New England, to Vermont, to Windsor county, to Hartford! From there students started to take a closer look at the geographical regions of Vermont. Each student was given the opportunity to explore one of the physiographic regions more closely. The past two weeks they have studied the land-forms, the climate, and the relative and absolute locations. They also began to think deeply about how the geography of this region impacts the people that live there. <br />

After studying each region, the students were asked to create a Glog. Glogster is a website that creates digital, interactive online posters. They spent about three class periods learning to manipulate pictures and type in text into the site. These Glogs will be the basis of tomorrow's school wide scavenger hunt!<br />
<br />
The class will be in their groups tomorrow and given a clue. The clue will direct them to a location in the school where they will find a QR Code that will digitally link the students to one group's Physiographic Region Glog. The clue card also includes 3 questions that the students will have to answer using the Glog as their text. Once they have completed that station they will return to class to check their answers and receive a piece of their Vermont puzzle. Once the students have collected all of the puzzle pieces they will have one final question to answer about Vermont. We are hoping that this fun and engaging activity will give students a chance to not only show off their Glogs to the whole class, but to also help them learn about other regions of Vermont that they didn't study.<br />

In reading this week, we started literature groups. Over the next few weeks, each group will be reading the same book. Students will discuss and work on skills specific to their reading levels and needs. Our focus will be to build higher level reading skills that require students to predict, infer, and analyze the text and the author's purpose. Ask your child what they are reading in class. Ask specific questions about the story setting, characters, and plot. The more they can talk about their books, the more they will be thinking about them. This pays off in the end. </div>

I am so excited to report that the class is doing phenomenal on multiplying larger numbers. We use an array model that helps the students see how we can break down larger numbers into more manageable pieces that make the problems far less daunting. Take a look at the picture below. You can see that we took 14 x 12 and broke it down into pieces that students can easily do in their head. This may seem like a lot of work for those of us who are used to the traditional method of multiplying. Don't worry,we will get there by the end of the year, but by doing this method students can easily make the transition. Look at the photos below to see what I mean. </div>

This week we also finished up science with a mini unit on germs: bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. We had the wonderful experience of having Dartmouth Graduate Students come to run an experiment with the kids. We investigated whether washing our hands with water, soap, or hand sanitizer would be best. The Dartmouth students came and collected each students' bacterial samples on Monday. We used petri dishes cut into 4 quadrants. The first quadrant students rubbed their unclean fingers, the second quadrant they rubbed the same finger that had been washed with just water. The third quadrant was rubbed by their finger which had either been washed with soap or with hand sanitizer, and the fourth quadrant was used for students to swab any place they wanted in the room to see how many bacteria were living there. On Wednesday the Dartmouth students returned with the petri dishes that had been in a grow lab for 48 hours. The fourth graders got to see the many bacteria that had grown. They even got to look up closely through this amazing microscope that gave them a wonderful view of their germs. But that doesn't mean we didn't do some great work this week. Students have become animal adaptation experts. The trip to VINS, while being lots of fun, also taught the students a great deal about the adaptations of animals right here in Vermont. Students put the final touches on the animals they created to survive a specific habitat. I'll post pictures soon, I promise! And in writing, students are writing conclusions on their very first complete essay based on the animal adaptations of a Great White Shark.<br />

We have jumped in with both feet to unit 2 in math class. We are building on multiplicative reasoning, and students will soon be expected to memorize their multiplication facts. I will be sending home flashcards a specific number each week. I can not stress enough the importance of students spending time studying the facts each night. Knowing their multiplication facts will help them in every other aspect of math class, not only for the remainder of the year, but from here on in in their math career.<br />

Remember to sign up for your parent/teacher conference if you haven't already using sign-up genius. I have also sent home a hard copy of the sign-up form with every student who hasn't signed up yet. Check your child's bag if they haven't given it to you yet. We will be going on one more field trip this fall. The students will be going to see a musical at Pentangle in Woodstock. This trip costs five dollars. We understand and acknowledge that we have had two field trips back to back. If there is a problem with the cost, please let us know. We don't want finances to ever be an issue for a child to attend the trip.<br />

No? Well, writing them made the fourth graders especially hungry this week. We spent a great deal of time learning the basic structure of a paragraph. Although this is not a new concept for the students, it is a skill that most continue to need to practice and improve. So where does the hunger come in you ask? It comes in my comparison between a paragraph and a big, yummy sandwich. <br />

Imagine for a second, the top piece of bread is the topic sentence. It helps to tell us what the rest of the paragraph is going to be, without it, we don't have a sandwich or a paragraph. Then under the bread comes all of our yummy ingredients that help to make that bread taste better, like turkey, tomatoes, cheese, bacon, etc. These ingredients are the details to our paragraph. Of course, like a sandwich that tastes a lot better with what I call "spice" (mayonnaise, salt & pepper, mustard, butter), the paragraph needs "spice" to help it from being dry. Finally, if we don't have a bottom piece of bread, or a conclusion sentence, our sandwich falls apart and makes a mess on our clothes. Ask your child about the "ingredients" of a paragraph!<br />

The fourth graders have been spending a lot of time working on Animal Adaptations over the course of the week. In science class they began to learn the details of behavioral and physical adaptations of animals. This learning carried over to reading where the students read a fascinating article about The Great White Shark and its very many adaptations and collected notes based on their reading. In writing class they began to organize these notes into the two types of adaptations. Next week they will put all of their information into their first written essay of the year.<br />

As much as they enjoyed the incredible details of the shark, the fourth graders loved the science project more, which allowed them to think of the many different types of adaptations we were learning and to create their own animal that lived in an assigned habitat of the world. Their imaginations were running wild, but I was most impressed with the thinking that happened around this project. After they finish the final touches of their posters, I'll be sure to post some examples here, but in the mean time check out the pictures of the amazing collaboration that was happening between the students as they discussed their animals.<br />

On another note, remember that Wednesday we will be heading to VINS for a field trip where we will be studying animal adaptations with hands on experiments and lessons. It is such a fun trip. This has been a fantastic week for reading. We have been working on opening ourselves to different types of genres. Sometimes young readers get stuck in one type of book and struggle to take a chance with something new and exciting. The fourth graders have spent the past week learning about different types of genre such as fantasy, realistic fiction, science fiction, myths, folklore, and biographies. The library has had a real push for new kinds of books, and Mrs. Vielleux is very excited. I encourage you to ask your child what new genre they learned about this week, and what they might be interested in trying out. </div>

Not only has the class been learning about new genres, but our reading groups spent the week working on reading with expression. We know that is what good readers do, but knowing and doing are sometimes two very different things. So, each day this week students came to reading group with a script in hand. They had become "actors" over night. They were reading their scripts each day to improve their fluency and expression. Every day they got better and better, and the characters started to come to life. </div>

One of the highlights came when the fourth graders completed their first science inquiry experiment. They came up with the focusing question: Do crayfish prefer open water or rock caves? Then the students wrote the protocol, completed the experiment, and collected data. Surprisingly our data didn't match our prediction. Be sure to ask your child about the results. <div><br></div><div> In Math class, we have shifted entirely to multiplication. Students have been manipulating larger numbers and have been reviewing strategies to use with the basic facts. It is important that they have skills to use to figure out the answers, but memorization of the facts is vital at this point as well. Students will be getting flash cards soon to begin studying each week. </div><div><br></div><div> In writing, students are learning to use details that show the reader rather than tell them. I've seen great growth this week. It was a wonderful morning. The sun stayed out just long enough to keep things warm and made the bed of the river easy to see. We were able to collect hundreds of crayfish! The kids were great and had a lot of fun. We probably could have stayed for hours more. On Tuesday, the fourth graders will be completing their first inquiry experiment with the crayfish. They will be planning a question to ask, predicting an outcome, collecting data, and writing about their results. This is a huge process that is in-depth and can be exhausting the first time around. I encourage parents to talk to their child about their experiences on Tuesday. I am sure that the students will have a lot to share. <br />

This first crayfish experiment is only preparing the fourth graders for a bigger inquiry project coming the following week. Students will be planning their own experiment based upon the data they have been collecting in their territories by the Dothan Brook. We survived our first full week of school with flying colors. It was an extremely busy week, and I was so happy to meet so many families on Open House night. Thank you all for coming out and supporting your children. They were so excited to take you through the scavenger hunt and show you all that they have been doing these past few weeks.<br />

This week we started two very important units. In math class, our focus shifted to the beginnings of multiplication. Students learn this math function using the area model, or array model. This is different than how multiplication used to be taught when I was in school, but trust me, as the numbers get bigger and bigger, it is a tool that students will use and return to all year long.<br />

In science this week, we officially began our animal inquiry unit with a trip down to the brook. Students received their territories and began to do a scientific map in their science notebooks. I was truly impressed in the growth I've seen in just the past week. The students were focused, and were really attempting to observe their areas the best that they could. The first day outside in the woods, the students ran around and saw very little. Afterward, they expressed their disappointment at not seeing chipmunks, squirrels, and even deer. The students were put in teams and went out to observe their first mini habitat, a rotting log. Students were asked to draw a simple face, the catch was that they only saw it for about 15 seconds. They then compared all of the pictures and discussed why they were all different and none even looked similar? How could that be when everyone was observing the same picture? The kids quickly came to the realization that only looking at it once meant they were making a lot of it up as they drew. They then got a photo of half of their face and were asked to draw the other side. This time looking as closely as possible to the details of their face to get an accurate observation. They had a lot of fun with this, and most were surprised how much they "saw" in their faces that they could then draw. </div><div><br></div><div>We will be building on these skills over the next few weeks. Well, we finished our first week of school with great success. I am sure that like me, your children are tired and happy to have today off to recoup from the week's activities. I enjoyed meeting all of the students, and I'm excited to really dive into the learning next week.<br />

In fourth grade, the kids spend a great deal of time working on projects together in groups. They talk, listen, bounce off ideas, analyze, and encourage one another to become the best that they each can be. Learning to collaborate and be part of a working group is a skill that is important to learn right away, and it was our focus for the past four days.<br />
<br />
Each student was put into a working group and then given a challenge. On the first day students were given 20 minutes to build the tallest cup tower. We let them go at it and watched them jump in with little to no thought about their approach or about working together. We spent time after reflecting on what each group thought they did well, what they wish they could have done better, and what they would do differently next time.<br />

The second day. students were asked to discuss the previous days activities and talk about what they learned from their successes and failures. I was in awe of how intuitive most groups were. They mentioned listening, cooperating, planning, taking turns, sharing ideas, not getting frustrated, and many more thoughts that surpassed my expectations.<br />

They were then given the task of building a tower out of pasta, tape, and string that could hold a marshmallow on the top. Again students were given 20 minutes, but this time each group sat and planned their approach before they ever began touching the supplies. They communicated different ideas. and some even went so far as to give everyone in the group a role to play. When the challenge was finished, students again reflected as a group what was successful and what wasn't. Most recognized that this challenge was more difficult, and yet somehow it went more smoothly than the day before!<br />

The third day, we introduced the key component to group work: communication. In this challenge students had to simply communicate their ideas and come with a group consensus. As you know, this can be one of the greatest challenges of any team building exercise. The students talked about how to be good listeners: face one another, eye contact, repeating what people said, asking clarifying questions, and they discussed how to talk: take turns, use a talking stick, share only one idea at a time, use eye contact, be positive, and provide evidence.<br />

On day four, we put it all together. We introduced the six qualities it takes to be a skillful group member. Then we challenged the students to work together to build a lego model. Simple right? Not quite. The model was in the front of the classroom, and students couldn't take it back to their table. They each had all of the pieces needed to build it, but they could only send one person up to the model at a time. This challenge takes great communication and listening skills and is downright impossible if you can't work together.<br />

At the end of this challenge we asked the students to do a written reflection of how they thought they used the 6 collaboration skills this week. I was excited to see the students using specific examples of how they listened or how they were respectful to others.<br />

Although we won't be doing daily challenges on a routine basis anymore, group work will not being going away. The skills that the kids learned this week will follow them throughout the year. Hopefully you can incorporate these ideas at home as well. If your child is working or playing with friends or siblings, I encourage you to remind them of the things they have learned this week and ask them how they can use these skills at home as well.

Many parents have asked what this looks like and what the expectations are for their children. Today we had a really wonderful moment where a student really did exactly as we've been practicing all year. She was showing her thinking, and then went further to make connections in her brain. This is Miss Mayfield's solo week. What does that mean? Well, Miss Mayfield has been working with our class since the beginning of January. She has been learning what it feels like to teach the students. She started by just helping out in the class and learning the way it worked. Then she moved to taking over a lesson during the day. From there she started taking over a subject, getting the feel for the continuity of planning day to day. Two weeks ago, Miss Mayfield taught the entire day. I was in the classroom, there to help her in any way that I could. We have done a lot of reflecting on her successes and on ways to improve. Last Wednesday, she took a day by herself. I was in the building, but she had the chance to experience first hand what it is like to come in first thing, set up for the day, and then execute her lessons. We spent a great deal of time on Wednesday afternoon discussing the day. I have been so impressed with Miss Mayfield's drive, her passion, and her willingness to continually push herself further. <br />
So that brings us to this week. Together, we have collaborated on the planning of the week. Miss Mayfield knows where we've come from, and what needs to be taught this week to get us where we need to go. This week is entirely her week. She has planned some fantastic lessons and will be running the classroom as the teacher. I know the kids are in for a treat. We had a bit of fun today. We are finishing up our unit on states of matter in science class. The students are clear about solids, liquids, and gasses, as well as the molecules behaviors that cause them to have their unique qualities. Our culminating activity included ice cream and soda. You guessed it, ice cream floats! This year each student has created a portfolio and are now beginning to put in work that they are proud to show their academic success. This week we started to dig deeper into these mysterious things called, "The Ends." <br />

The idea of the online portfolios is that they will be used by every student in the district for their entire school career. It will be a place to collect work that they have done that shows how far they have come in all aspects of being a student. These aspects are broken down into what are called, The Ends. They include: Citizenship, Life Skills, Health and Well Being, Global Awareness, Academic Excellence, and Technology/ Information Skills. <br />

The fourth grade team decided to start the process slowly. We chose to focus only on two areas this year, technology and academic excellence. So this week we began to really look at Technology and Information Skills and what that means to our students. We broke down this end into manageable goals that the students could understand. We asked them to brainstorm ways that they are already showing and demonstrating their knowledge of this particular End. We then broke them into smaller groups and gave them each one goal to focus on. Each group came up with a skit that could be used to teach younger students about the Technology End. They should be able to tell you that things with more molecules are more dense and things with less molecules are less dense. We spent the afternoon playing with water, oil, corn syrup (they loved that!), pennies, plastic, hard candy and cork! We tested their densities by creating what I called a liquid sandwich. Today the fourth and fifth graders kicked off their Reading Olympics! For the next two weeks teams of four will be competing to see who can read the most minutes. Students have been divided into twenty-one teams consisting of a mix of four students from both grades. Students will be recording when they read, and for how long. They will require an adult signature in order to keep everyone true to their word. Please encourage your child to read and to help their team win some great prizes! Friday, February 14th students will have a "Closing Ceremony" where gold, silver and bronze will be awarded. Happy Reading!</div>

As soon as we got off the bus we were greeted by "Uncle Eli," who told us that we were traveling back in time to 1890. The students counted back from 2014, 2010, 2000, 1990, 1980... and then were "magically" transported to another time. They received new names, and were told that old standards applied. They used sir and ma'am, the boys held doors for the girls, and manners were of the utmost importance. The class was broken up into four groups, and the students began working on the chores of the farm to help out the "Monroe Family." They did the laundry by hand, made their own butter, cleaned out the stalls in the barn, sewed a quilt for a sick relative, and even made their midday meal. I was so proud of my students. They were so kind to one another, listened to directions, and truly got into the play acting of the day. At the end of the trip the actors all commented how wonderful the class behaved, and one even mentioned that this was the best group they had come through this season. I couldn't have been more proud!<br />
